French Lace: Pyrenees pattern - source: The Illustrated Dictionary of Knitting

First published in Britain around 1840, the pattern of this lace is dainty and suitable for the finest yarns.  I wanted to work this pattern through twice so I could see the full effect - so I had to use tiny needles and yarn to stay under 7".

Terms:  sk2tog po, means:  slip 1, k 2 tog, pass slipped stitch over

FOR SWATCH:

Using sport weight yarn and size #1 needles cast on 47 sts.

Work 1" seed st.  Work seed st on 5 sts, Pattern of 37 sts, and seed st on 5 st until you have worked pattern through twice.  Work 1" seed st.  Bind off in patt.

PATTERN:  Worked over a number of stitches divisible by 18, plus 1.

2nd row:  K2 tog, * yon, k1, k2 tog, yon, k2, k2 tog, yon, k1, yon, ssk, k2, yon, ssk, k1, yon, sk2togpo, rep from * ending last rep ssk in place of sk2togpo.

Note:  originally the ssk would have been worked with an skpo but this gives a cleaner line to the diamonds.

Fern Pattern: from mon tricot Knitting Dictionary Stitch Patterns and given in British terms - I changed it a little making "wrn to M1" into "YO".  Also, I wasn't really happy with the way the left edge and right edge weren't matching up as mirror images, for the second half of the swatch I experimented with ending the rows with sl 1, ssk, psso - but it wasn't all that much better.

This pattern would be totally cool as a raglan increase - stagger the ferns, one each side, and don't compensate with the decreases.  I think I'll try this in a baby layette set.

FOR SWATCH:

Using sport size yarn and #1 needles, Cast on 39 sts.  Work seed st for 1".  * Work seed st on 5 sts, work pattern on 29 sts, work seed st on 5 sts *.  Rep from * to * working pattern through 3 times.  On 3rd repeat of pattern work the center sts in stockinette after 1st row.  Work 1" seed st.  Bind off in pattern.

Pattern:  Takes multiple of 29
